The historic town of Shepherdstown W.Va. will hold its 21st annual Back
Alley Garden Tour and Tea the weekend of May 19 and 20.
The event, which is sponsored by the Shepherdstown Community Club, will
include a self-guided walking tour of many private gardens rarely open to
the public, and an elegant afternoon tea.
Featured for the first time this year will be a tour of the gardens of
Popodican, the official residence of the president of Shepherd University. The
extensive gardens are being professionally planned by landscaper James Dillon
and visitors will have an opportunity to observe the changes and see the
gardens in their early stages.
Also new this year, a planned Monarch butterfly way station where
visitors can learn about the habits and needs of the Monarchs from the
Monarch Alliance.
Incorporated in 1792, Shepherdstown has numerous historic 18th- and early
19th-century homes. Many of the gardens on the Garden Tour will be on the
grounds of those homes.
The town will host other visitor-friendly activities on those days,
including an exhibit by the Friday Painters who will hold their exhibit in
conjunction with the Garden Tour and Tea at the War Memorial Building, and a
Farmers Market on Sunday.
The Tour and Tea and all other weekend activities will be held rain or
Garden Tour hours will be 10 a.m.–4 p.m. on Saturday and 11 a.m.–4 p.m.
on Sunday. The teas will be offered from noon–4 p.m. each day.
Admission to both the Garden Tour and Tea will be $20 per person before
midnight, May 17, and $25 thereafter. All proceeds will be used to support
two important community assets the Community Club owns: the historic War
Memorial Building, and Morgan’s Grove Park.

the Village Florist,and Four Seasons Books, all located on German Street in
