The Potomac Playmakers have announced auditions for the third annual one-act play
festival by area playwrights. For the last two years, The Potomac Playmakers
have staged a series of one-act plays written by Maryland playwrights. For
this third installment, the Potomac Playmakers conducted a playwriting
competition, and opened it up to playwrights from Maryland, Virginia, West
Virginia, and Pennsylvania. The winning plays are as follows:
“A Mother’s Love” by Amelia Lowry — A mother delivers a baby boy,
only to find out that the baby is an intellectual who may have heard a little
too much Nietzsche in the womb. The script calls for a cast of three, two
females and one male performer.
“Tailored” by Jeffrey A. Marcum — A son returns to his hometown for the
first time in years for his father’s funeral, and visits the tailor’s
shop where he used to work to get a new suit. But the tailor may have a
different design on the young man as the tailor weaves a plot to unite the
man with the tailor’s daughter. The script calls for four performers, two
males in their 20s/30s, one male 50s or older, and one female in her
“Where’s Gus?” by Charlie Perkins — A dog’s owner brings a new cat
into the home, and the dog isn’t happy with this new development,
especially as an older dog has been away from the home for a period of time.
The kitten, meanwhile, can think of nothing but escape. Can the young dog
work together with the kitten and teach the kitten the ways of the world, just
as a burglar arrives? The script calls for 3–4 performers, one female, and
2–3 male performers ranging from late teens to their 30s.
Additionally, The Potomac Playmakers will stage “The Snallygaster” by
Kristen Evans, which was a winning play in the Frostburg University One Act
Playwriting Competition. In the play, a husband and wife are at the
crossroads of their marriage in the husband’s dead-end hometown. The
script calls for 3–4 performers, one male and female in their late
20s/30s, and 1–2 male performers in the 50s or older.
The One-Act plays will be directed by Barry Harbaugh, Maverick McKee, Chas
Rittenhouse, and Jim Zuna. Auditions for the One Act Play Festival by Area
Playwrights will be held on May 14, 2018 and May 15, 2018 at The Women’s
Club, located at 31 S. Prospect St. in Hagerstown.
Auditions will begin at 7 p.m. and will consist of cold readings from the
scripts. The One-Act Play Festival by Area Playwrights will be held July
13–15, 2018 at The Women’s Club in Hagerstown.
