Author Suellen A. Burkey will be signing copies of her book, "Tales from the
Old Jail, An Informal History" on July 28 at The Old Jail in Chambersburg.
The book is the result of exhaustive research in archives at the Jail and
recounts the history of the building and its "guests" from its 1818 construction
until its rescue from demolition in the early 1970s. The book contains 12
chapters, focusing on subjects such as slave catchers and abolitionists, hangings,
famous prisoners, the World War, and daily life. Books will be available for
purchase for $16 plus tax, and all proceeds benefit the Franklin County Historical
Society, housed in the Old Jail, located at 175 E. King St., Chambersburg.

Suellen is a seventh-generation Franklin County native who lived and worked
throughout the country before returning to Chambersburg. A graduate of the
Mercersburg Academy and Franklin and Marshall College, she has a Bachelor of
