Factors that Weigh Into the Decision
The choice between public and private school is a decision with many variables, but here are some reasons that families choose the private school path:
• Small Class Size: Teacher to student ratio is normally 1:8, with class sizes topping out at about 15 students. Most public school classrooms include 25 students or more.
• Highly Qualified Teachers: Most private school teachers hold a first degree in their subject, and 70–80 percent of private school teachers have earned their master’s degrees.
• Superb Facilities: Media centers and books are the main focus. Many private schools boast high performing athletic teams, along with extracurricular activities such as choir, band and clubs. Participation is not required but highly recommended.
• Focus on Personal Development: Along with an emphasis on preparing students for higher education, private schools focus on developing maturity.
• Stellar Academic Standards: Since private schools can select their students, they can hold students to higher academic standards.
